Fastest Growing Artists on Spotify: Oct.21-28

This chart highlights the artists with the greatest relative gain in Spotify Monthly Listeners, a metric that is updated every day and consists of “unique listeners who play your music during a 28-day period.

Wavo Analysis 

  • A co-sign from Rihanna goes a long way. After the superstar called BIA's "Best on Earth" her new favorite song in an Instagram post, it immediately took off on Spotify, earning the rapper a 278% gain in Monthly Listeners. BIA first got her start on the reality show "Sisterhood of Hip Hop".

  • Reality TV has been also been kind to rapper Flawless Real Talk. Though he ultimately lost the hip hop competition, his appearance on Netflix's "Rhythm + Flow" series helped double his Instagram following (as we saw last week) and triple his Spotify Monthly Listeners.

  • Netherlands-based artists Yade Lauren and Kenneth G also saw strong gains in Monthly Listeners this past week, earning 213K and 100K unique listeners, respectively.

  • Harry Styles was knocked out of the top Spotify spot by Selena Gomez, whose single "Look at Her Know" drove a wave of 6M Monthly Listeners this past week.

  • Following several strong months for the Cyrus clan, youngest Noah Cyrus has seen a 9% gain in Monthly Listeners (nearly 1M people), connected to her latest single and video for "Lonely."

  • The Black Eyes Peas are back on the radar after a musical hiatus with a "RITMO," a reggaeton rework (featuring J Balvin) of 90s dance hit "Rhythm of the Night."

  • Kanye West's new gospel album has given him a healthy 12% gain in Monthly Listeners, especially since it was released just three days ago.

 
Popular Artists on Instagram: Oct.21-28

Instagram is one of the most important social platforms for music discovery and engagement. This chart highlights the artists with the biggest followings on Instagram and their follower growth.

Wavo Analysis

  • Many of the most popular artist Instagram accounts (Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, Katy Perry, and Rihanna) belong to performers who built their fanbases through traditional media, like physical releases, radio, and TV.

  • Last week, we pulled the top 10 popular artists on Instagram and only one account belonged to a male artist. A similar trend continues with the top 20—80% of the most popular accounts are female artists.

  • Only Dua Lipa saw a decrease in monthly followers (-0.04%), though her next single "Don't Start Now"—set to be released on November 1st—is bound to drive her numbers back up.
