Recap: the International Forum of the Americas’ Discussion on AI

Thursday, June 14th, concluded the 4-day International Forum of the Americas in Montreal, self-described as “committed to heightening knowledge and awareness of the major issues concerning economic globalization, with a particular emphasis on the relations between the Americas and other continents.” The Forum hosted over 4000 participants and more than 200 speakers, and took place on the heels of this year’s G7 summit in Charlevoix, Quebec.

While technological disruption from artificial intelligence underlay the majority of the forum’s conversations, it was heartening to listen to experts at the top of the field focus on the ethical implications thereof and the importance of the responsible development of AI.

WMNinTECH: on BDC’s “Women In Tech: Finding Opportunity on the Challenging Path to Success”

On Wednesday, May 23, BDC, BDO and MontrealNewTech hosted an event at Salon 1861 called “Women In Tech: Finding Opportunity on the Challenging Path to Success.” The event featured a variety of panelists experience in the field, and common themes in their remarks included: the importance of mentorship, how to balance work and family life, girls needing more self-confidence, being able to filter the advice you receive, taking risks, and having a network of like-minded individuals to fall back on.

Still, more focus could have been given to the barriers faced by women in tech in particular, and there was little to no discussion on the importance of diversity in AI.
