Weekly Music Data Report: Sept 16-23

A new week brings new music data to crunch.

To stay ahead, here is your September snapshot of Spotify's fastest-growing artists and top performers, as well as trending cities and venues for live events, covering the 16th to the 23rd.

1. Fastest-growing artists

This chart shows the artists who experienced the greatest relative growth in Spotify Monthly Listeners between September 16th and 23rd.

What’s behind the growth?

Typically occupied by rising, buzz-worthy acts, most of the artists included in this chart are traditional Chilean groups who haven't released new music in years.

A likely reason for the spike in interest was due to Fiestas Patrias, a Chilean holiday celebrating the country’s independence (Sept 18th). Celebrations, which double as a festival for the arrival of spring, lasted until the 22nd. These artists provided the soundtrack.

Santiago, Chile’s capital and largest city (6.5M people), is one of Spotify’s most active markets and was responsible for boosting streams of the traditional acts.

What’s behind the growth?

A handful of the artists featured in this chart (Lana Del Rey, bbno$, blackbear, El Alfa etc.) held on to their top act status from last week’s snapshot

New addition Miley Cyrus joined forces with Lana Del Rey on the latest Charlie’s Angels theme song. She also performed at the iHeart Radio Festival on the 21st, covering Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Halsey announced a 2020 UK and Ireland tour today, performed at the Emmy’s last night, released a new single "Graveyard" last week, and featured on the most recent Post Malone album, released September 6th.
