This chart highlights the artists with the greatest relative gain in Spotify Monthly Listeners, a metric that is updated every day and consists of “unique listeners who play your music during a 28-day period.

Wavo Analysis

  • Christmas comes early on Spotify. In a recent Spotify post, the streaming giant explained how listener behavior begins to change in November as the holidays approach. You will see some of this festivity reflected in today's chart.

  • Christmas and novelty songs from Gayla Peevey, The Muppets, and Vince Guaraldi Trio drove new Monthly Listeners their way, with the biggest gain seen by Peevey, who recorded the song "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" in 1953 at just 10 years old.

  • Pop-electronic acts Joey Stux and Mugisho saw impressive gains as well. They both released new songs on November 1st ("Where You Belong" and "Now or Never," respectively).

This chart includes some of the world's most popular artists, filtered to highlight those with impressive gains in Spotify Monthly Listeners.

Wavo Analysis

  • On the strength of her recent single with IZA and Major Lazer, Ciara added nearly 500K new Monthly Listeners over the last seven days. Following a trend of non-English international hits, the song was performed mostly in Portuguese (IZA's native language and Ciara's first effort).

  • Two surprise song drops from Frank Ocean shot him to the near-top of Spotify's most popular artists this past week. The timely return of his Apple Beats 1 radio show after a year-long hiatus, along with a string of New York club nights are sure to have boosted his exposure too.

  • Johnny Cash saw a bump in listeners due in part to the promotion for his documentary "The Gift," available to stream as a YouTube Original today. With recent biopics about Queen and Elton John and documentaries from Beyonce, Travis Scott, and Mark Ronson all released within the last two years, we should expect more music-related film content to come in 2020.

Instagram is one of the most important social platforms for music discovery and engagement. This chart highlights the artists with the biggest followings on Instagram and their follower growth.

Wavo Analysis

  • The most popular artist Instagram accounts (which remain similar week-over-week) can give us cues about the makeup of the music industry. For example, much like the Billboard Top 100, this chart is dominated by US pop and hip-hop acts, with a growing presence of Latin artists.

  • Another cue: your favorite pop stars are growing up. The average age of the most popular artists on Instagram is 31, with men trending higher (33) and women slightly lower (30). Snoop Dogg and Jennifer Lopez are the only artists over 40 years.

  • All but four of the top artists on Instagram (Dua Lipa, Anitta, Nicki Minaj, and Demi Lovato) have scored a number-one single on the Billboard 100. Those who didn't have either made it into the Top 10 on at least one occasion or reached number one on a streaming or genre-based chart.
