The Most-Streamed Songs of Summer 2019
/Every Monday, we take a look at a significant marketing statistic and how it relates to the music industry. Today, we look at the songs that dominated on Spotify, YouTube, and Pandora over the summer season. Originally sent out in our Weekly Stat email.
1. Spotify’s Song of the Summer
With over 565 million streams since its June release, "Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello was crowned Spotify's #1 global hit of the summer. The song sat atop the Spotify Global Top 50 chart for eight straight weeks. All but one of the Spotify top 10 summer songs were collaborations. See the top 20 songs on Spotify's blog, including music by breakout stars Lizzo and Lil Tecca.
2. YouTube’s Song of the Summer
The YouTube chart includes global views of all official versions of a song (i.e. the official music video, user-generated-content that uses the original song, and lyric videos.
One chart takeaway is the lack of English-language music. Six songs feature Spanish and one (Blackpink's "Kill This Love") features Korean. According to MIDiA Research, Latin America accounts for 27% of all video streaming users and Brazil and Mexico are Vevo’s 2nd and 3rd largest markets globally, after only the US.
3. Pandora’s Song of the Summer
Pandora is only available in the US, so their top summer hits more closely resemble the Billboard Hot 100 charts. There is an emphasis on US artists and hybrid pop-trap music (J.Cole, DaBaby, Lizzo, and DJ Khaled), as well as two country-influenced songs (Luke Combs "Beer Never Broke My Heart" and Lil Nas X "Old Town Road").
